What We Know So FarData collected through 1999 reveal many interesting things about the UFO community. For example, contrary to the statements of some earlier sociologists, people who have an interest in UFOs do not tend to be significantly more socially alienated (no pun intended) than other people. In fact, in some regards they appear to be less alienated than the average American. Also, people who have an interest in UFOs tend to have attained higher levels of education than the general population. This dispels the notion that the only ones who believe in UFOs are "poor white trash." (Although the UFO movement is disproportionately white.) Also of interest is the fact that, among people who report abduction experiences, about 1/3 say that they have always known about them. Only 4-5% of respondents said that most of their abduction memories have been derived from hypnotic regression sessions. Almost 2/3 say that they have never been hypnotized in order to retrieve abduction memories.
