Cover art for The Lure of the Edge: Scientific Passions, Religious Beliefs and the Pursuit of UFOs by Brenda Denzler

Taking elements from the book The Lure of the Edge, Melissa Reed, a professional artist (and experiencer) has created a painting for the cover entitled "Portal." This powerful work combines depictions of "flying objects" from medieval tapestries, paintings, and etchings, with images inspired by both "authentic" and faked UFO photos. The composition also includes symbols said to have been found at the Roswell crash site (symbols familiar to some Native Americans), the Drake Equation, crop circles, foo fighters, Native American petroglyphs -- even craters on the Moon.

All of these images are woven together to culminate in the image of a human and ET hand touching - a gesture richly symbolic of the layers of possibility suggested in the composition, the text, and the interconnection between extraterrestrial and terrestrial life. The design is a contemplation of the interplay between the various archetypes and symbols . . . prompting the question, What is reality?
